Professor Gribben has been an enthusiastic contributor to the vision of Selden College and has served as a Director since its inception. He sees the inestimable value of the curriculum and the breadth and depth of learning that Selden offers its students.
Alongside his commitment to Selden College, Professor Gribben is Professor of History at Queen’s University Belfast, writing extensively about history, culture and religion. His special interests are in early modern Britain, focusing on John Owen (“the Atlas of the Independents”) and J. N. Darby (“the Goliath of dissent”); in the religious history of the modern United States of America; and in the long history of Christian Ireland.
Married to Pauline, they have four children.
Academic History
Professor Gribben is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and the University of Strathclyde. He has held academic posts in early modern literature and history at the University of Manchester (2004-2007) and Trinity College Dublin (2000-2004, 2007-2012). Since taking up his current position at Queen's (2013), he has acted as head of the School of History and Anthropology (2015-16) and as Queen's director of the AHRC Northern Bridge PhD programme (2017-2020). He has held visiting positions at the University of Lausanne, Westminster Theological Seminary, and Sciences Po, Lille, where he served as a visiting professor (2022-25).
